Uk’s ben wijay starts canute music, a sub-label of phreakin recordings displaying his more adventurous techno and tougher house music concoctions. bringing a slightly harder feel than the phreakin output, but remaining left of centre with quirky melodies groovy percussion. “poisoned potato” starts in dark techno waters with a deep acid bass line, then blossoms into almost border community territory with anthemic distorted chords and quirky breakdowns. “feke” delves deeper with an arrangement that goes from hauntingly minimal into an aggressive staccato riff, then morphing back into itself with deeper melodies. definitely aimed at the 3am dance-floor and will appeal to lovers of the detroit techno sound through to the more obscure villalobos territory. gathering big support from the likes of charles webster, john aquaviva, aldrin and mixmag’s ‘house single of the month’ (feb 08). www.myspace.com/benwijay
